“Here's an idea: let's get over ourselves, buy a cherry pie, and go fall in love with life.”

-- Tom Robbins

We can’t imagine why George Washington would ever want to chop down a cherry tree! Why would he ever want to deprive himself of amazing pie? Nevertheless, his story, whether myth or real, carries on. With February as his birthday month, National Cherry Pie Day was just celebrated yesterday, and Pi Day just around the corner, and we are all about cherry pies right now!

Cherry pie is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite pie. And sour cherry pie is the only kind of cherry pie that I even care about. Plump tart silky bright red juicy orbs, piled deeply inside the flakiest pastry crust, with lattice top so the ruby jewels show through are what my pie dreams are made of.

A pour of heavy cream, a dollop of unsweetened homemade whipped cream, or a scoop of the best vanilla ice cream sends cherry pie straight over the top.

While I love to bake these pastry beauties myself, I also love to discover artisanal cherry pies baked by fellow pie-lovers at pie shops and bakeries around the country. So the BN Team set out to find the best of the best. We are sharing some of our favorites with you below.

Bubby’s scrumptious lattice sour cherry pie.

BUBBY’S

Bubby's the iconic restaurant in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, started as a pie shop way back when, and it’s still making some of the best pies in town. Their classic cherry pie is a showstopper. Made with the finest sour cherries, a touch of almond extract, and an all butter flaky lattice crust, Bubby’s cherry pie will take you back to grandma’s kitchen -- that is if your grandma was an ace pie lady herself. To gild the lily, go for à la mode with Bubby’s homemade vanilla or chocolate ice cream.

If you can’t get to New York to sample their pies in person, you can try your hand at Bubby’s Cherry Pie recipe. And be sure to check out their Bubby’s Homemade Pies cookbook for even more inspiration and recipes.

Perfectly baked cherry pie with a lattice and crimped edges by Chile Pies Baking Co.

CHILE PIES BAKING CO.

Chile Pies Baking Co. doesn’t just do a simple cherry pie. No. They pair tart Michigan cherries with soft silky apricots for a spectacular marriage made in pie heaven. Practically every slice they serve is à la mode with Nimble & Finn’s organic handmade ice cream. Why fight it? You can even drink your pie here! Check out their pie milkshake: a thick slice of your favorite pie blended with ice cream and milk. Crazy good!

Delectable slice of Montmorency Cherry pie by Little Pie Company.

LITTLE PIE COMPANY

It’s very clear that Little Pie Company loves pie in a big way. Founded by Arnold Wilkerson, a former actor who loved his grandma’s pies so much he was moved to carry on her traditions, the shop has been serving beautiful homespun pies since 1985.  Located in New York’s theater district, Little Pie Company offers “a theater of baking,” as passersby can watch deliciousness unfold through the shop’s giant picture windows.

Made primarily with locally sourced seasonal ingredients and handmade crusts, the pies are baked in small batch steel ovens. The Montmorency Cherry Pies are only made when Hudson Valley cherries are in season. Mark your calendars! One taste, and you’ll love Wilkerson’s grandma too!

Order a whole pie and you'll receive free sugar cookie shaped like the pi symbol as a bonus! Remember that for Pi Day, coming up in just a couple of weeks!

If you can’t manage a visit to the shop, you’ll be happy to know, Little Pie Company ships nationally for next-day delivery.

AMERICAN SPOON

If you love sour cherries as much as we do, you won’t be happy unless you can have them anytime you crave them. Lovingly prepared in small copper kettle batches, they deliver the truest taste and texture of tart Michigan cherries ever captured in a jar. Indulge in whole pitted Montmorency cherries, suspended in a rich ruby-red cherry syrup.
